The chefs who have made France the land of gastronomy

Since the 17th century, France has seen its culinary practices gradually evolve to become the great country of gastronomy known around the world today. In the Middle Ages, spices were heavily used in every dish, but gradually gave way to more delicate herbs such as thyme and laurel. This was followed by the Italian influences of Catherine de Médicis, the refinement and cooking techniques developed at the court of Louis XIV, then the appearance of inns and finally the first Parisian restaurants in the 18th century. It’s all these aspects, century after century, that have shaped French cuisine. Discover the restaurateurs who, from the 18th century onwards, made France the land of gastronomy.

Marie-Antoine Carême

Born in 1783, Marie-Antoine Carême was the first restaurateur to be named the “king of chefs, and chef of kings”. More than that, he was the first to bear the title of “chef”. Born into a modest family, at the age of 8 he was hired as a kitchen boy by a Parisian cabaret owner. It was here that he developed his talents, eventually becoming an apprentice pastry chef in a large house on rue Vivienne. After making a name for himself with some of the great Parisian names of the time, such as Talleyrand, he opened his own pastry shop, which soon became famous throughout Paris for its “pièces montées” made with sugar, honey, nougat, meringues and marzipan. He is particularly renowned for having been one of the first to turn pastry into an art form, depicting monuments and pyramids.

In addition to patisserie, the man nicknamed Antonin Carême also tackled main courses in French-style services. He continued his career in the kitchens of such great names as Talleyrand, George IV, Tsar Alexander II and the banker de Rothschild. Posterity owes him the use of more seasonal fruits and vegetables and lighter sauces in French gastronomy.

Auguste Escoffier

If there’s one restaurateur who inspired the cuisine still served today in France’s top restaurants, it’s the great Auguste Escoffier. In particular, he is famous for having codified, modernized and professionalized gastronomy. In the kitchens of major hotels and establishments, he created the kitchen brigades that are still at work today. He wanted clean kitchens and chefs de parties, each with precise tasks. It was these changes that enabled French cuisine to become institutionalized.

On the dining room side, he was responsible for many dishes that remain famous to this day: Poire Belle Hélène, Peach Melba, Salade Eugénie, Crêpe Suzette… It was undoubtedly his experience in the army during the Franco-Prussian War that inspired him to develop discipline in the kitchen, as well as the art of cooking with leftovers. Moving between Paris, Cannes and Monte-Carlo, he took part in the development of luxury hotel cuisine with César Ritz. He was one of the pioneers of fixed-price menus and food non-waste. Towards the end of his life, he was the first chef to receive the Légion d’Honneur, and wrote the preface to the Larousse Gastronomique. His talents as a chef and writer helped to spread the fame of French cuisine around the world.

Fernand Point

You could say that Fernand Point was born in the kitchen! His father ran a “bistrot de gare”, a much-lamented type of establishment where fine French cuisine was served at every station, and his mother was a cook. So, it was only natural that he should dedicate himself to French cuisine and gastronomy.

He was the first chef to be awarded the Michelin Guide’s famous 3 stars, and to welcome great names to his signature restaurant “La Pyramide” in Vienne, near Lyon. The owner of his own business, Fernand Point’s bonhomie and genuinely jovial personality popularized a style of chef that still features prominently in the media today. Legend has it that he drank a bottle of Champagne a day. France is beautiful!

Paul Bocuse

A pupil of Fernand Point, whom he considered his mentor, Paul Bocuse is a veritable institution in French cuisine, particularly in Lyon, and remains so to this day. He was awarded 3 Michelin stars uninterruptedly for over 50 years. He contributes to the media coverage of chefs by appearing on TV and radio… He embodies simple, local cuisine, but also the expansion of savoir-faire around the world. With numerous franchises around the world (USA, Japan…), “Paul Bocuse” has become a brand in its own right. Throughout his life, Paul Bocuse won numerous awards and medals (Meilleur ouvrier de France, Cuisinier du siècle…). A French success story.

Joël Robuchon

Born at the end of the Second World War, Joël Robuchon remains famous as the chef who has won the most Michelin stars in his lifetime. Like Paul Bocuse, he has won numerous awards, including “Chef of the Century” and “Best Restaurant in the World”. Initially entering religion as a young man, he finally decided to embark on a career as a restaurateur after getting a taste for cooking with the establishment’s nuns.
He then went on to work for the Compagnons du devoir, and later for leading hotel restaurants. In addition to his talents in the kitchen, he diversified by becoming a consultant for major agri-food groups. He chose to take early retirement at the age of 50 to concentrate on promoting good cooking in the French media. Today, his “Joël Robuchon workshops” can be found all over the world.

Alain Ducasse

More entrepreneur than chef, Alain Ducasse is still at the head of a global restaurant empire. Born on a farm, he grew up picking, fishing and hunting. He collected food and cooked it with his family. He went on to spend the rest of his life working his way up from chef to restaurant, earning 2 or 3 stars along the way.

Hélène Darroze

Hélène Darroze may only have two Michelin stars in France, but she does have 3 Michelin stars for one of her restaurants in the UK. She worked under Alain Ducasse at one of his restaurants, the Louis XV, and made a name for herself as a judge on the famous cooking show Top Chef.

Thierry Marx

Initially a paratrooper for several years, Thierry Marx successfully turned to the restaurant business in the second half of his career, after joining the Compagnons du devoir and being noticed by renowned restaurateurs such as Joël Robuchon. Thierry Marx is best known for his mastery of molecular cuisine. Today, he owns a bakery franchise and runs a dozen cookery schools.

Nina Métayer

A true pastry prodigy, in 2023 Nina Métayer was voted “World’s Best Pastry Chef” at just 34 years of age. Despite her young age, the chef has already worked for top establishments such as Le Meurice and Café Pouchkine.

Cyril Lignac

Voted “France’s favorite chef” several times, Cyril Lignac has made a name for himself on numerous TV cooking programs. He is particularly famous for his signature phrase “gourmand et croquant” (“crunchy and delicious”). Cyril Lignac owns several restaurants and patisseries in Paris, where he continues to alternate between chef and media host.

Day 1: Latin Quarter and Trocadero

Start your French adventure by exploring the heart of the city: the iconic Notre-Dame-de-Paris cathedral. Currently undergoing renovations following a major fire in 2019, it’s nevertheless a must-see stop on your discovery of Paris. Take a tour to discover all its facets, as well as the Ile de la Cité where it’s located. After a good hour’s stroll, head west of the Ile de la Cité to visit the sumptuous Sainte-Chapelle, built by Louis IX to house Christ’s crown of thorns.

After admiring these monuments, head first to nearby Île Saint-Louis to discover what is perhaps the most beautiful spot in Paris. With its old buildings, ideal location right in the middle of Paris and famous Berthillon ice creams, there’s plenty to tempt you. Then cross the bridge to the south to stroll through the Quartier Latin, an area famous for its picturesque little streets and for having been a favorite haunt of students from all over Europe for centuries. Enjoy lunch in one of the district’s traditional brasseries, savoring authentic French dishes.

In the afternoon, continue your exploration of the Latin Quarter by strolling through the splendid Jardin du Luxembourg and discovering the majestic Pantheon. If you have time, you can push a little further into the 5th arrondissement to Mouffetard Street, a magnificent downhill street filled with delicious restaurants and boutiques.

Arrive early to avoid the crowds and begin your visit in the Cour Carrée, a quiet and beautiful inner courtyard, before passing beneath the museum’s iconic glass pyramid to begin your exploration. Here you’ll find works from a variety of civilizations and periods, from Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquity to Renaissance masterpieces and beyond.

Start with Egyptian antiquities, where you can admire mummies, sarcophagi, statues and everyday objects that will immerse you in ancient Egypt. Then move on to the Greek and Roman section, where you can admire the famous Venus de Milo and the Victory of Samothrace. After this immersion in Antiquity, head to the painting galleries, where you can admire Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Mona Lisa, as well as other masterpieces of European art. Don’t miss the Galerie d’Apollon, home to the Crown of Louis XV and other jewels.

In the middle of the day, take a well-deserved break without leaving the museum grounds by visiting Angelina, located in the Richelieu era. This is an offshoot of the famous Parisian Belle Époque tea room, renowned for its hot chocolate and Mont-Blanc, a pastry made with meringue, chestnut cream and chantilly. Lunch at Angelina is an experience in itself, so take time to savor the elegant surroundings and refined cuisine. Try to take a rain check to avoid the crowds.

After you’ve eaten well, discover the Richelieu wing, home to French works of art including sculptures, paintings and objets d’art, as well as the Cour Marly and Cour Puget, two magnificent glazed courtyards. In the Sully wing, you’ll discover oriental and Islamic antiques. If you still have the time and energy, round off your day by exploring the Denon wing, where you can admire David’s impressive painting, Le Sacre de Napoléon, and other 19th-century works of art.

A full day may seem both exhausting and insufficient to explore all the treasures the Louvre has to offer, but it will give you a good insight into the incredible richness and diversity of the site’s collections. At the end of the day, treat yourself to a terrace in the nearby Palais-Royal district and head home for a good night’s rest before your 3rd day in the French capital.

Day 3: From the Marais to Montmartre

On your third day in Paris, immerse yourself in the charming atmosphere of the historic districts in the heart of the city. Start your day in Le Marais, a charming old quarter known for its 17th-century mansions and picturesque streets, but also for being a trendy area and the capital’s LGBTQIA+ district.

Take a stroll along Rue des Rosiers, the heart of the historic Jewish quarter, where you can enjoy falafel at L’As du Falafel or Eastern European pastries at La boutique jaune or one of the other bakeries and grocery stores in the area. Nearby, if you have the time and inclination, visit the Musée Picasso, home to an impressive collection of works by the famous Spanish artist.

Continue your stroll towards Place des Vosges, Paris’ oldest planned square and one of its most splendid. Surrounded by uniform red-brick buildings with slate roofs, this square is an ideal place for a short break. You’ll also find Victor Hugo’s house, where the author of Les Misérables lived for sixteen years, now transformed into a museum. Finally, to round off your morning in the marsh, discover Place Saint-Paul, with its beautiful church and warm atmosphere.

For lunch, we recommend one of the brasseries in the Place du Marché Sainte-Catherine, with its magnificent panoramic views.

After lunch, it’s time for a change of neighborhood! Take the metro to Abbesses station to discover Montmartre. This bohemian district is famous for its lively artistic life in the early 20th century, and offers a breathtaking view of the city from the hill on which it sits. From Abbesses, soak up the local atmosphere and climb quietly towards Sacré-Coeur, a gleaming white basilica that dominates the landscape. On your way, you’ll come across the superb Place du Tertre, famous for its artists who are ready to give you a piece of their mind. Once at the top, take time to visit the church and admire the panoramic view over Paris. It’s one of the most beautiful panoramas of the city, with distant views of monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, the Pantheon and the Church of Saint-Sulpice. It’s an inviting place to pause and contemplate (but beware of pickpockets and scalpers).

In the early evening, stroll the winding streets of Montmartre, past the Bateau-Lavoir, a former artists’ studio where Picasso and Modigliani worked, and visit the Musée de Montmartre if you’d like to learn more about the neighborhood’s history. Don’t forget to explore the more modern side of Montmartre by visiting the je t’aime wall in the small garden of Square Jehan Rictus.

What better way to end a day in Montmartre than with a show at a famous cabaret in the Pigalle district, such as the Moulin Rouge or Chez Michou? It’s real Parisian life with a taste of the good old days!

Day 4: Palais Royal and department stores

On your fourth day in Paris, immerse yourself in the city’s historic grandeur by visiting some of its most majestic palaces and gardens. Start with the gardens of the Palais Royal, a peaceful place that contrasts sharply with the noise and movement of the surrounding streets. Stroll through the covered galleries and stroll through the tranquil gardens, where Parisians like to read their newspapers on the tree-shaded benches. This is undoubtedly one of the city’s most beautiful spots, and home to the Constitutional Council and the Ministry of Culture.

Head north out of the Palais-Royal gardens to a charming area known as the Japanese Quarter of Paris, close to the Pyramides station. Through the narrow streets, head for the Opéra Garnier, a masterpiece of Second Empire architecture. You can admire the gilded façade and the statues that crown it, or take a guided tour to discover the opulence of the grand foyer and the magnificence of the grand auditorium. According to legend, this is where the famous Phantom of the Opera once resided.

From here, you can head a little further north to discover Paris’s department stores, located on the Grand Boulevards. Galeries Lafayette and Printemps are 2 iconic Parisian stores where you’ll find designer clothes, cosmetics and refined delicacies. If you choose this itinerary, don’t forget to visit the Printemps roof terrace for a breathtaking view of Paris. Finally, if you’re traveling during the festive season, take time out to admire the lively department store windows with your children. We recommend finding a restaurant for lunch on the Grand Boulevards or in the surrounding streets.

After lunch, stop off at Place Vendôme, famous for its luxury jewelry stores and its impressive column, erected by Napoleon to celebrate his victory at Austerlitz. Then head all the way down the impressive Avenue de l’Opéra to the Louvres, which you visited 2 days ago. Now it’s time to discover the magnificent Tuileries Gardens. It’s a very pleasant place, perfect for a stroll. Along the way, if you wish, you can discover the Musée de l’Orangerie, home to Monet’s Water Lilies, and the Musée du Jeu de Paume, dedicated to photography and the visual arts.

Finally, head east to Place de la Concorde, then turn left to Les Invalides. This historic complex houses several military museums, a church and the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte. The gold of the Invalides dome is an unforgettable sight, especially at sunset. End your day with dinner in one of the many gourmet bistros in the area.

Day 6: A day at Versailles

Your sixth day in Paris takes you out of the city for a complete immersion in the opulence of the French monarchy: the must-see visit to the sumptuous Château de Versailles. Start your day by taking the RER C train to Versailles Rive Gauche. The journey takes around an hour from the center of Paris. Once you’ve arrived, it’s just a ten-minute walk through the charming streets of Versailles to the château entrance. We advise you to arrive before opening time, and to visit during a weekday. Queues can be long. Don’t forget to bring your picnic if you don’t want to leave the château grounds during the day.

Your visit to the Château de Versailles begins in the immense main courtyard, before entering the château to discover the royal apartments, where you can admire the extraordinary Galerie des Glaces, the sumptuous King’s and Queen’s rooms, and the various salons, each dedicated to a different god. Allow 2 hours to tour the castle and admire all the rooms and furnishings. Then it’s on to the gardens. Designed by André Le Nôtre, these formal gardens are a veritable work of art, with carefully arranged flowerbeds, sculptural fountains, ponds and avenues lined with precision-trimmed trees. Choose the perfect spot for a picnic before continuing your tour in the afternoon. Don’t forget to visit the Grand and Petit Trianon, pavilions built for Louis XIV and Louis XV respectively, as well as the Hameau de la Reine, a rustic village built for Marie-Antoinette, where she liked to retreat from court life. Perhaps you’ll meet her ghost along the way, as you apparently already have?

To round off your visit, we recommend pushing on to the farmhouses at the far end of the Versailles park. The thatched cottages are truly picturesque and give a good idea of life close to the court at the time. At the end of the day, all that’s left to do is catch the train back to Paris to enjoy your last evening in the French capital.

Day 7: Enjoy Paris a little longer

For your last day in Paris, we offer three different options to suit your mood. You can decide which one best suits your preferences and mood.

Option 1: Discover Paris’s trendy alternative districts

Start your day with a visit to the Saint-Ouen flea market on the outskirts of town, the largest flea market in the world, made famous by the Lupin series, perfect for bargain-hunting and discovering hidden treasures. Next, head to the Canal Saint-Martin, a trendy district ideal for a leisurely stroll, with many cafés and independent boutiques to discover.

Option 2: Day trip to Giverny

If you’re not in a hurry and are an art and nature lover, then definitely consider taking a day trip to Giverny, where you can visit Claude Monet’s home and gardens. You’ll marvel at the water lilies and Japanese bridge that inspired so many of his works. Please note that Giverny is about an hour by train from Paris, plus a few minutes by bus.

Option 3: Relax in the Bois de Boulogne

For a more relaxed day out, head west of the city to discover the Bois de Boulogne. You can hire a boat and paddle on the lake, visit the Jardin d’Acclimatation with its attractions for children, or the sumptuous Parc de Bagatelle with its rose garden and free-roaming peacocks.

4 days in Paris

How can you imagine visiting France without spending several days discovering its capital, Paris, known worldwide for its beauty, its monuments and its gastronomy. We advise you to spend at least 4 days of your trip there, and even more if you can afford it. Here is a recommended itinerary for these 4 days of discovery.

The Latin Quarter and the Eiffel Tower (day 1)

For this first day in France, start with a visit of the Notre-Dame-de-Paris cathedral and the Sainte-Chapelle which are two magnificent and emblematic monuments very close to each other on the Île de la Cité. You can then choose to stroll in the Latin Quarter a little further south and stop for lunch in a good brasserie. In the afternoon, continue your exploration of the Latin Quarter with a nice walk in the Jardin du Luxembourg and the discovery of the Pantheon. Then take the metro to the Trocadero. You will have a superb view of the Eiffel Tower with the sunset. You can then choose to finish this day by admiring the view from the top of the Eiffel Tower and taking a cruise on the Seine on a bateau-mouche.

The historic heart of Paris (day 2)

Spend your second full morning visiting the Louvre Museum, famous for housing Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and many other magnificent works. It is the largest museum in the world, so it would take several days to visit it all. For a first visit, we advise you to privilege the Denon wing. After this strenuous visit, a good idea is to pick up a sandwich and a macaroon or another French pastry in a bakery near you. You can then have a picnic in the Tuileries gardens, which are adjacent to the Louvre. After a stroll through these beautiful green spaces, take the metro to the Montmartre district. Here you can admire the beautiful Sacré-Coeur Basilica, the picturesque streets filled with street artists, or the magnificent view of Paris. End the day with a show at the Moulin Rouge or a dinner in a typical restaurant nearby.

Discovering the Marais (day 3)

For this 3rd and last day in the French capital, we recommend you to explore the Marais, one of the favorite neighborhoods of Parisians to walk around. Visit the Place des Vosges, the Saint-Paul church before having lunch on a terrace near the Pompidou center, a controversial monument of the city. After lunch, stroll along the Canal Saint-Martin to the Bassin de la Villette to discover another side of Paris. You’ll love ending your afternoon in Paris in the lively Belleville neighborhood. Then enjoy your evening in Paris by exploring the nightlife of the 11th arrondissement.

If you have more time on your hands, we recommend dedicating another day or more to explore Paris. There are still many places to discover in the capital, such as the Grands Boulevards, the big grocery store of Paris, the Buttes-Chaumont park…

The Palace of Versailles (day 4)

The city of Versailles is very close to Paris and can be reached in just 30 minutes by RER. Start your day with an early arrival at the Château de Versailles, a jewel of French heritage and one of the most important symbols of royal absolutism. This historic monument is famous for its magnificent architecture, opulent rooms, such as the Hall of Mirrors, and eventful history. We recommend that you arrive early to avoid long lines and take your time to visit this majestic site. A guided tour can be a good idea to get a feel for the history of the place.

For lunch, the best thing to do is to stay within the grounds of Versailles and have lunch at Angelina’s. If the line is too long or you want to eat elsewhere, then go back and choose among the many restaurants and bistros located in the Saint-Louis district, right next to the castle. The alleys here are actually quite charming.

Spend the afternoon in the vast and beautiful gardens of Versailles. Designed by André Le Nôtre, these gardens are a masterpiece of classical French gardening, with splendid parterres, fountains and statues. If you have the opportunity, don’t miss the Grandes Eaux show, where the fountains of the Versailles gardens come alive to the rhythm of baroque music. As you proceed through the grounds of the palace, you will find Marie-Antoinette’s domain, consisting of the Petit Trianon, Marie-Antoinette’s private residence, and the Hameau de la Reine, a bucolic farmhouse created for the queen to escape from court life. The visit of the latter is included in the ticket of the Palace of Versailles. Finally, we recommend that you visit the nearby farmhouses and enjoy the gardens again before returning to Paris for dinner.

3 days in Normandy

In order to make the most of the rest of your stay, we advise you to rent a car to get around. It is quite possible to continue only by combining the train and buses or shuttles, but this may limit you in your movements and constrain you to certain places and times.

Deauville and Honfleur (day 5)

For this first day in Normandy, get up early and drive to Deauville, about 2.5 hours from Paris. The city is a French seaside resort famous for its Casino, its boards and its fine sandy beaches. The typical architecture of the city with its Belle Époque villas is also a pleasure for the eyes. For lunch, let yourself be tempted by a seafood platter in one of the many restaurants of the port. In the afternoon, head for Honfleur, a small port town not far from Deauville with an undeniable charm, with its Vieux Bassin lined with half-timbered houses. After a good walk and a good Normandy milk ice cream (the region is famous for its milk, cheese and cider), drive to the town of Bayeux where you will spend the night. Don’t miss the opportunity to admire the gothic cathedral of Bayeux illuminated under the starry sky.

The D-Day landing beaches (day 6)

For your second day in Normandy, devote your morning to the discovery of the famous Bayeux Tapestry, a medieval work of art depicting the conquest of England by William the Conqueror. For lunch, a traditional crêperie in the heart of the city is an excellent choice. After enjoying a good galette complete with raw cider, it’s time to immerse yourself in the history of D-Day by visiting the D-Day beaches and the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. These dune beaches, in addition to being huge and beautiful, are home to many memorial sites and museums. Among the best known and most immersive, we recommend Utah beach, Omaha beach or the small town of Sainte Mère Eglise. Not far from Omaha beach is the largest American cemetery that you must visit in Colleville-Sur-Mer. Places full of history. In the evening, return to Bayeux and enjoy a dinner in one of the many restaurants of the city, where you can taste local cider and Norman specialties.

The Mont Saint-Michel (day 7)

For your third and last day in the beautiful Normandy region, head to one of the most beautiful places in France: the Mont Saint Michel. This emblematic monument, perched on a rock in the middle of a huge bay, is a real wonder to discover. Its abbey which overhangs the place is dedicated to the archangel Saint-Michel, defender of the Good. Admire the famous quicksand around the mount and then take the time to have lunch in one of the many restaurants of the village. Be careful, the place is extremely touristic and not all the restaurants are of good quality. If you want to live a real experience, we advise you to go and taste the very famous omelette of the Poulard mother. In the afternoon, you can lose yourself in the narrow streets of Mont Saint-Michel and climb up to the abbey. The place becomes even more beautiful at sunset.

3 days to discover the castles of the Loire Valley

Visit of the city of Blois (day 8)

If you have followed our proposed itinerary, then the morning will be spent driving to the city of Blois in the Loire Valley. Once you arrive, we recommend that you start by discovering the Royal Castle of Blois, a splendid and emblematic monument that offers a true retrospective of the arts and history of the Loire castles. Afterwards, stroll through the old town of Blois, north of the castle, and choose a local brasserie for your lunch. This is an opportunity to taste the wonderful world-famous wines of the Loire. In the afternoon, extend your discovery of Blois with a walk through its picturesque streets, half-timbered houses and lively squares. Finish your day by going to bed early, because tomorrow it’s off for 2 days of cycling!

The Castle of Chambord by bike (day 9)

Get up early, have a good croissant for breakfast and plan a picnic for lunch. Today, you will leave your car in Blois and rent bicycles for a 2-day tour of the Loire castles. Bike paths are everywhere in this region which receives many tourists by bike every year. It must be said that the vegetation offers very beautiful paths, punctuated by castles and wine estates. First of all, let’s go to the Chambord Castle, 20km from Blois, a masterpiece of the French Renaissance built by François I. It is famous for its unique architecture, its original staircase and its impressive park. It is one of the most emblematic castles in the region, and certainly deserves a few hours of your time. After this visit, enjoy a picnic lunch to savor in the castle’s extensive gardens. Then, drive back to Cheverny. This part of your journey takes you through the picturesque Loire countryside, a sight not to be missed. Upon arriving in Cheverny, take time to rest at the hotel and dine at one of the local restaurants, again taking the opportunity to taste the local wines.

For this third and final day in the Loire Valley, leave your bike at the hotel for the moment and go explore the Castle of Cheverny, known for its beautifully preserved interior and impeccably maintained gardens. It was this castle that inspired Hergé to draw the castle of Moulinsart, home of the famous hero Tintin. After visiting the castle, take time for lunch before cycling back to Blois. If you have time, don’t hesitate to stop at one or two wineries on your way. Depending on the season and the mood of the winemakers, some estates can be visited without a reservation. The winegrowers will make you taste their best wines while explaining how they make these beautiful Loire wines. An unforgettable experience! Finally, the return trip to Blois is once again an opportunity to admire the beauty of the French countryside before returning the bikes and resting for the rest of your 2 weeks in France. Perhaps you’ll come back to the area later to discover the other castles in the area such as Chenonceau or Amboise.

3 days in Provence

Here is the last step of your 2 weeks stay in France. To finish in the sun, we propose you to discover the south of France, more precisely the region Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur (PACA). Between the lavender fields and the Mediterranean coast, we are sure you will love it!

If you follow our suggested itinerary, you will have to spend part of this day on the road. Indeed, to go from Blois to our next destination, it takes 6 hours. Fortunately, the French landscapes are green and hilly, which makes them beautiful. On the way to Provence, you will certainly find a small village where you can have lunch and take a break in Auvergne or elsewhere. Then, by mid-afternoon, you should arrive at your destination: the beautiful village of Sault, nestled in the hills of Provence. Upon arrival, be dazzled by the purple glow of the lavender fields, a true icon of the region. Take the time to walk through these fields, so soothing. A real treat for the senses and for photographers. If it’s still early, you can then make a stop at a local distillery to understand the process of turning lavender into essential oil. Finish your day by resting in a charming inn while tasting the good rosé wine of the region, because tomorrow you will leave for an exploration of the papal city, Avignon.

The papal city of Avignon (day 12)

Get up early, enjoy a good cup of coffee and get ready for a cultural day. Today you will leave Sault behind and head to Avignon, commonly known as the Papal City. It is so named because it was the seat of the papacy from 1309 to 1377, during which time 7 consecutive popes, all French, ruled over Christendom from this city. The Palais des Papes awaits you, majestic and imposing, offering a fascinating journey through the history and art of Provence. The building, once the residence of the popes, impresses with its gothic architecture and its vast halls. After the visit, spend the evening strolling through the old town of Avignon, with its picturesque streets and charming squares. The sweetness of life in Provence.

On the way to Nice (day 13)

For this third day in the South of France, you will leave Provence to join the French Riviera. It takes about 2 hours to reach the city of Nice and its famous Promenade des Anglais. This big city is very charming and has a real Mediterranean atmosphere. Start with a stroll along the Promenade, admiring the azure sea. Then head to the Old Nice and the Cours Saleya flower market, for an explosion of colors and scents. After lunch, you can choose to dedicate your afternoon to culture, by visiting for example the Matisse Museum and the Marc Chagall Museum, or go visit a cute little town nearby like Cannes or Antibes. For dinner, let yourself be tempted by the French local specialties in Nice, such as the Socca or the Pissaladière.

Here you are at the end of these 2 weeks in France. Through this journey, you will have been able to discover the French heritage under several angles. The Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris is famous for its spooky and mysterious stories, including ghostly apparitions. The Lady in White, the ghost of Adolphe Thiers, and the spirits of famous personalities such as Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf, and Frederic Chopin allegedly haunt the cemetery’s alleys. Visitors report chilling atmospheres, whispers, songs and melodies coming from the graves, as well as oppressive and disturbing presences.

The legend of the Lady in White tells of a weeping woman searching for her lost lover, while the ghost of Adolphe Thiers continues to watch over the place and discuss politics. The spirits of Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf and Frederic Chopin seem to perpetuate their respective talents, with accounts of songs, echoes of voices and piano melodies rising from the cemetery. The stories surrounding these ghosts arouse the curiosity and concern of visitors, adding to the mystery and fascination surrounding Père Lachaise.

Beyond ghostly apparitions, Père Lachaise has also been the site of black masses. These occult ceremonies, often associated with the desecration of graves and satanic rites, would have taken place in the alleys of the cemetery, away from prying eyes.

There are rumors that occultists still gather regularly in the cemetery to invoke dark forces and perform forbidden rituals. The ghosts of the Petit Trianon

The Petit Trianon is a small building located in the park of the Palace of Versailles, built at the request of Louis XV for his mistress, Madame de Pompadour, in the mid-18th century. Later, it was given to Marie Antoinette by Louis XVI, who used it as a private refuge.

The ghost story dates back to 1901, when two British schoolteachers, Charlotte Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain, visited the Versailles estate while on vacation in France. According to their story, while walking through the park, they got lost and reached the Petit Trianon. It was there that they had a strange and confusing experience.

The two women reported seeing buildings and gardens that seemed to belong to another time, as well as people dressed in 18th century costumes. Among these spectral apparitions, they described a man wearing a tricorn hat and a face scarred by smallpox, who showed them the way. As they continued on their way, they also encountered a woman in an elegant dress and lace shawl, her face marked by a deep sadness, as if she carried the weight of history on her shoulders.

The heavy and oppressive atmosphere that surrounded them seemed to intensify as they approached the Petit Trianon. It was there that they thought they recognized the figure of Marie Antoinette herself, sitting and drawing near the castle. The teachers were struck by the melancholy that emanated from the queen, as if she were trapped in a past from which she could not escape.

Beyond these encounters, other shadows and silhouettes seemed to move around them, giving the impression of witnessing a scene from everyday life at the 18th century court. The ghosts went about their business without taking any notice of the two women, adding to the strangeness of the experience.

Shaken by this adventure, Moberly and Jourdain recorded their observations and published a book entitled “An Adventure” in 1911, under the pseudonyms of Miss Morison and Miss Lamont. The book generated a great deal of interest and was widely discussed at the time.

Dr. Marcel Petiot is known as one of the most sordid French criminals of the 20th century. A doctor by profession, he moved to Paris between the wars to escape legal troubles. However, what he was going to do during the Nazi occupation of France was much worse.

From 1940 on, Petiot set up a scheme to take advantage of the situation. He promised desperate people safe passage out of occupied France in exchange for large sums of money. He lured them to his mansion in Paris, where he injected them with a supposed vaccine against tropical diseases before their departure. In reality, it was a cocktail of deadly drugs. Once his victims were dead, he stripped them of their valuables and disposed of their bodies by dissolving them in acid or incinerating them in his basement.

In March 1944, Petiot’s neighbors finally reported a foul odor emanating from his home. Authorities discovered the remains of several victims and immediately launched a manhunt for Petiot. He was finally arrested in May 1944 in Paris.

The trial of Marcel Petiot began in March 1946 in Paris. He was accused of 27 murders, although the actual number of his victims may be much higher. Petiot pleaded not guilty and claimed that he was a member of the French Resistance and that the people he killed were Nazi collaborators. However, the evidence was overwhelming, and he was convicted of 26 murders and sentenced to death. Dr. Marcel Petiot was executed by guillotine on May 25, 1946.

This story dates back to the 14th century, when the pies of a master pastry chef on the Île de la Cité were among the most prized in the capital. Yet behind their exquisite taste was a sinister secret and a scent of crime. Reality or legend ? Let’s dive into this Parisian enigma.

Rumor has it that in 1384, a barber and a pastry chef on the rue des Marmousets formed a macabre alliance, taking advantage of their professions to commit revolting acts. The barber would slit the throats of the unfortunate students, while the pastry chef would cook them to make his delicious pâtés. The butchered bodies were transported through a secret trapdoor between the two shops, allowing the pastry chef to transform the human flesh into refined dishes. According to legend, the success of these pies had not escaped the attention of King Charles VI, who loved them without knowing their true composition.

The darkness surrounding these crimes was revealed in 1387, when the howling of a dog, witnessing the disappearance of his master, alerted the local residents and the authorities. Investigators discovered the damning evidence in the cellars of the two accomplices, putting an end to their macabre enterprise.

The shops were destroyed and their occupants condemned, leaving behind a disastrous memory. Today, the site of the old stores houses a motorcycle police garage, and a mysterious stone, supposedly the block used to butcher the victims, remains as the only remnant.

Seven centuries after this disturbing case, doubts persist as to its veracity. Is it a terrifying reality or a simple urban legend ? The truth remains elusive, but the story continues to fascinate and attract the curious in search of mystery and thrills in Paris.

The mysterious disappearances of Courtalon Street

The Halles district, the nerve center of Parisian life, is haunted by a macabre past. The rue Courtalon, although unknown and discreet, has been the scene of sinister and frightful events, which still arouse fear and curiosity today.

In the seventeenth century, the street Courtalon is plunged into terror following the sudden disappearance of 26 young people. The darkest rumors spread, evoking bloodbaths to cure a sick princess, or kidnappings perpetrated by Jews to crucify Christians. King Louis XIV himself ordered that the matter be fully investigated, causing a stir in the Parisian population.

It is then that the investigator Lecoq, supported by his son, unveils a terrifying plot. The “princess” Jabirowska, a bewitching beauty, lures young people to the rue Courtalon, where they are murdered and decapitated. Their mummified heads are sold to Germany for anatomical studies, while their bodies are sold to medical students.

The dark alleys of Courtalon Street still echo with the muffled cries of these innocent victims, while the shadow of the false princess hangs over the place. Some claim to have seen the silhouette of a grieving woman, mourning the loss of her humanity, while others whisper that she may still be alive, hidden in the city’s meanders.

The terrifying tales surrounding Courtalon Street add to the mystery and fascination that permeates the Halles district. Every step down this narrow alleyway brings back memories of a bloody past, and discerning visitors can’t help but feel a chilling atmosphere, as if the souls of the victims are still wandering these parts, seeking to unlock the buried secrets of the head-chopping princess.

Day 1 : Paris’ hypercenter

To get your stay off to a good start, head to the Île de la Cité to admire the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Despite the renovation work following the 2019 fire, this cathedral remains a must-see in the capital. You are here at ground zero of the mileage count in France : here is the heart of the country ! Take advantage of your morning to visit not far from there the Sainte-Chapelle, jewel of the radiant Gothic style wanted by Louis IX and famous for its impressive stained glasses. Finally, don’t forget to take a walk on the Île Saint-Louis, with its charming cobbled streets, its craft stores and its famous Berthillon ice cream parlour.

Then head to the Latin Quarter, where you can stroll through the streets lined with bookstores, boutiques and cafés. The Saint-Séverin Church and the Collège des Bernardins are places not to be missed. You can then have lunch in one of the many typical restaurants of the rue Mouffetard or around the Place de la Contrescarpe, a very popular place for students and artists.

After lunch, take a walk in the Jardin du Luxembourg, a real haven of peace in the city center. Discover the statues, fountains and flowerbeds that adorn this garden, as well as the Palais du Luxembourg, which houses the Senate, one of the two chambers of the French Parliament. Admire on your way the Pantheon, where the great men of the French Republic, such as Victor Hugo, Emile Zola and Marie Curie, are buried. If you feel like having a snack, stop at the Great Mosque of Paris, a place of worship and relaxation where you can enjoy a mint tea and oriental pastries in its charming garden.

To finish this first day, we recommend you to take the metro to reach the Eiffel Tower. From the top of the Tower, on the 3rd floor, admire the Seine, the Grand Palais or the magnificent bridges of Paris : the Pont des Arts or the Pont Alexandre III. You can then finish the walk by passing by the Champ de Mars and the Trocadero. A good idea to end the evening can be to stroll along the quays of the Seine and to take a cruise on a flyboat to contemplate the city by night. What could be more beautiful than admiring the illuminated monuments and discovering the history of Paris thanks to the comments of a guide ?

2nd day : the right bank and the historic area of Paris

Le musée du Louvre

To begin this second day, go to the Louvre Museum. This world-famous museum houses a huge collection of artworks, including Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Plan to arrive early to avoid the long lines and take time to wander through the galleries. We recommend that you book a tour with an interpreter to discover the museum’s must-see masterpieces and make the most of your visit. Allow at least 3 hours for your visit. To visit the Louvre in its entirety would take several weeks !

When you leave the Louvre, head for the Tuileries Gardens, where you can relax and enjoy the green spaces, sculptures and pools. Then cross the Place de la Concorde, where the Obelisk of Luxor is enthroned, to reach the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. It is impossible not to walk along the most famous avenue in the world, lined with luxury boutiques, theaters and cafés, until you reach the Arc de Triomphe.

After lunch in one of the many restaurants in the area, head to the Montmartre district. Take the funicular or the stairs to the Sacré-Coeur basilica, which offers a panoramic view of the capital. Take the opportunity to visit the interior of this unique church, then stroll through the picturesque streets of Montmartre, discovering artists’ studios and local craft stores. Don’t miss the Place du Tertre, where painters and caricaturists exhibit their work. There are also 2 or 3 very good restaurants for a gourmet break. Same thing further down in the rue des Abbesses or the rue Lepic.

To conclude this second idyllic day in Paris, go down a little further to the lively Pigalle district and the famous Moulin Rouge. If you have reserved tickets in advance, you can attend a cabaret and French cancan show to immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere of the Belle Époque. If you prefer a quieter evening, opt for a dinner in a typical restaurant of the Butte Montmartre, where you will be able to taste specialities of the district like the eggs meurettes with foie gras. Yummy !

Day 3 : Enjoy the Marais !

On your third and final day in Paris, begin your day by exploring the Marais district, one of the oldest and most charming parts of the capital. Stroll through the narrow, cobblestone streets lined with historic buildings, art galleries and fashion boutiques. Don’t miss the Place des Vosges, one of the most beautiful squares in Paris (the most beautiful according to me writing this), where Victor Hugo’s house is located. Not far from there to the west is a monument that is quite disparaged by Parisians : the Centre Pompidou. It is an avant-garde building built in 1977 that houses the National Museum of Modern Art. Some like it, others find it very ugly. However, there are works by major artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Duchamp and Kandinsky. The panoramic view of Paris from the stairs or the roof terrace of the museum is also worth a visit.

For lunch, choose among the many restaurants and bistros in the Marais. We recommend “Chez Janou” for example, which offers excellent cuisine and a very friendly neighborhood atmosphere. We then recommend you to lose yourself for a few hours in the Marais’ alleys filled with beautiful little stores. This is where you’ll find some of the most famous designer artisans in the French capital.

In the middle of the afternoon, head to the Place de la Bastille, a place full of history where the French Revolution took off. From there, head north along the Canal Saint-Martin, a great place to stroll and enjoy the peaceful, bohemian atmosphere of the neighborhood. Don’t miss the locks and footbridges that line this picturesque canal. This is where Parisians come to spend their sunny Sundays.

Finally, we have chosen to end your stay in Paris in the lively and cosmopolitan neighborhood of Belleville. Murals and street art decorate the streets of this popular and artistic neighborhood. Take the time to get lost in the Parc de Belleville, which offers a breathtaking view of the city. For dinner, it is here more world cuisines that dominate, Paris being a city open to the whole world.
